Walkathon FAQ

What is the Walkathon?

The Gardner Bullis Walkathon PTA fundraiser is the largest school community event of the year. The fundraising is powered by students! The Walkathon is an avenue for kids to raise money for critical PTA programs like technology, music, art and library, and is a ton of fun for our staff and school families. Bring siblings and walk with your kids, or sit back by our coffee cart and enjoy the fun! The goal is for kids to walk as many laps as they can, winning prizes on site for laps walked. They can gather pledges from grandparents, neighbors, etc., and later collect money based on how many laps completed. We can also accept flat fee sponsorships, should you wish to donate money in support of a walker. Classes and kids who walk the most laps and raise the most money can win fabulous prizes!!!

Important Dates to remember:

9/14-10/12 Students register and obtain pledges

9/28 Deadline for pre-registration to guarantee a Walkathon T-shirt and underwriting

9/29-10/13 Registration continues but T-shirt is NOT guaranteed

10/13 WALKATHON! 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

10/19 Deadline to collect pledge payment to be eligible for awards

10/26 Awards at Friday Flag Salute

How do I collect Pledges?

You will once again be able to create your own web page with PledgeStar to share with family and friends. Earn the following prizes for raising money and participating in the Walkathon:

• $100 raised - Surf board key chain

• $250 raised - Surf board Squeezie

• $500 raised - Hang 10 draw string bag

• $1000 raised - Boogie board + recognition at the Morning Assembly and on the website

In addition, there will be individual prizes for the 3 top earners, class parties for participation and pledge money raised, as well as prizes for laps walked.  

What if my child can’t be there the entire time?

You do not need to be there the entire time in order to participate.  Please come for as long as you are able. Each child who registers before Sept 28th will still receive an awesome Walkathon t-shirt that is theirs to keep even if they are unable to walk.  

How many laps is my child expected to walk?

Students are advised to set their own personal goal that will drive and inspire them. The maximum number of laps on the lap card will be 100! Parents may wish to help kids set an ambitious but achievable goal.

Who needs to register?

All students and children planning to participate in the walkathon must register. Registration, if completed by September 28th, includes a 2018 Hang 10 t-shirt and everyone registered will receive a lap card which tracks their progress for prizes. Fees are $20 per walker. Additional t-shirts can be purchased for parents and non-walking siblings.

Can siblings participate?

Yes! All are welcome.

What should I bring on the day of the Walkathon?

Water bottles, sunscreen, hats, and something to buy snacks and tickets for games! We will be accepting cash or credit cards on site.

Will food and drinks be available?

Yes! We will have coffee and breakfast snacks for sale in the morning and lunch and shave ice available for sale in the afternoon.

How do the laps work?

Students walk laps throughout the event. Every time they complete a lap, a volunteer will mark their lap card. When students reach certain designated numbers of laps, they will receive a small prize or treat.  Lap cards are then turned in a the completion of the event so that we may tally the results and determine which students completed the most laps.

What other activities will there be?

Family and kids are welcome to participate in a variety of games and activities while taking a break from walking laps, or while waiting for siblings to complete their laps.

Can I pay by credit card at the Walkathon?

YES!  The PTA is pleased to offer credit card purchases in addition to accepting cash payments at the Walkathon.
