This month’s ABC book for upper grades: “Nobody Knew What To Do” by Becky Ray McCain tells the story of how one child found the courage to be an UPstander and tell a teacher about a fellow student who was being picked on and bullied by children in school.

Goals of the lesson:
· Identify caring adults who provide support and positive communication.
· Teach students how to tell and make a report.
· Use positive self-talk to boost personal power in interpersonal relationships.
· Role model UPstander responses to support each other.
· Create a caring, safe school environment for all by teaching adults on school campuses how to respond to student reporting.
· Generate ways to be UPstanders when faced with cyberbullying.
 
To reinforce this lesson at home:
- Be the one your child can come to when they need to be heard. Listen and be aware of situations that need further attention.
- Stay calm and gather information by asking questions. In most instances, you can help your child identify and state the problem. “So Jack is picking on you at recess. What are some things you/we might do?” Help your child see their personal power is in how they choose to react.
- Discuss the potential consequences of the chosen strategy. “If you go to the teacher what would happen?” Look at 2 or 3 strategies and consequences and have your child choose one.
- Reassure your child. Thank them for sharing their worries and tell them that you will be “there” when they need help. Check back later to see if the strategy is working.
- If you are not sure what to say or do, reassure your child you will find a way to help and get back to them. Follow through on your promises.

Join the merchants of Downtown Los Altos for the 56th Annual Downtown Los Altos Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 10am-Noon. Free for children ages 1-10.

BookQuest Celebration on Tuesday - April 2nd, 2019

Please come celebrate what our BookQuest authors have accomplished! Published books will be on display (authors can take books home after the event). Everyone is invited to join us for the 3rd BookQuest Celebration, which will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd (International Children's Book Day). Come and browse 60 books published by our own Grizzly students! We would love to interview our student authors about the stories they wrote during the celebration - if you are interested to share your experience as a writer and would like to participate in a short interview session by your fellow students, please indicate it to us when you come for the event. We will have a guest speaker - Madeleine Dunphy, celebrated author of award-winning Web of Life series about animals and environment, who will share her writing experience to further inspire our students. We will hold raffle prizes for our student authors and light refreshments will be served. All students and their families are invited!

If you are not familiar with BookQuest program/celebration, the Town Crier newspaper covered our Celebration night for the last two years - please check out the following links to see the picturesand/or to read previous years' article 2017 or article 2018. Through our BookQuest program we have raised $415 this year and the money will go to Lucille Packard Foundation for Children's Health.

LASD & LAEF are excited to kick off the 3rd STEM Career Day Events at Egan and Blach Jr. High Schools this spring. STEM pervades every part of our life. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. We believe that exposing students to different aspects and careers in this field will inspire them and spark passion.

When to Keep Your Child Home From School
Sometimes it is difficult, especially early in the morning, to know whether or not to send your child to school. The following guidelines are indications that you should keep him/her home. In this way, you are helping to control the spread of colds, flu, and other contagious illnesses.
 

Keep your child at home when he/she has any of the following symptoms:
You need to keep your child home until he/she has been symptom free without medication for 48hours. Also, NOTIFY THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY if your child is exposed to or contracts chicken pox, mumps or measles or whooping cough (pertussis). These conditions can be life threatening to students who are undergoing therapies that suppress their immune systems.
 

The following information is only a guide to common childhood health concerns. Call our District Nurses or personal health care provider for more information. Always bring a copy of a physician’s note to school and/or notify the school if your child will have an extended absence due to a health condition for 10 days or longer.
     Fever
     Chills
     Vomiting or Diarrhea
     Nausea
     Sore throat or trouble swallowing
     Coughing, sneezing, and/or runny nose
     Rash or unusual sores or spots
     Headache

     Generalized muscle aches and pains
     Wheezing or trouble breathing
     Unusually red, crusted or burning eyes

     Head Lice

Ask the Superintendent

As the Board of Trustees and I face the complex challenges of providing facilities for Bullis Charter School next year, our community has asked the question: “What is mediation and what do you hope mediation with the charter school will accomplish?”

First and foremost, the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees, our community and I want peace and a long term agreement with the charter school so that we can focus on what we do best:  provide an exemplary education for our students.  As the charter school has grown over the years, the Board and I believe an enrollment cap is an essential component of any agreement to protect our neighborhood schools in the long term.  We believe mediation could achieve an enrollment cap and avoid the historically litigious and expensive disagreements with Bullis over facilities.  Click here for more information on this history.

Mediation is a dispute resolution process in which both parties voluntarily meet with the assistance of a trained, impartial third-party in a confidential setting in which the parties are free to speak candidly about their objectives and needs, exploring an agreement that both sides find beneficial.

We are working through mediation on a parallel track to the Proposition 39 process, which provides guidelines for facilities allocation to charter schools. As our mediation ensues, we have mutually agreed to delay the upcoming deadline by an additional two weeks (until April 1) with the hope that mediation will instead result in a concept for a long term agreement that will make the Proposition 39 process unnecessary.

I am hopeful that through mediation followed by a robust and transparent public input process, our community can achieve a long term agreement that will bring peace and stability to our schools for years to come.
