Spring and Winter Concerts
Each elementary school hosts its own Spring and Winter Concerts.
Spring Instrumental Concert (4-6) - This concert highlights students' emerging talent in the orchestra or band, as well as new found recorder skills in the 4th grade. Its purpose is to teach students self esteem, responsibility and a love for music.
Winter Holiday Concert (Grades 4-6) -This vocal concert for 4th & 5th grades features more mature songs that promote the students' growing abilities. As it is performed in the winter, they sing winter and holiday songs to get audiences in the spirit of the holidays. This concert will also feature the 6th grade Band and orchestra.
Junior High Concerts - At the junior high level, Band, Orchestra and Chorus have concerts in the fall and spring. Additionally students perform regularly at school events and competitions.
Junior Olympics
Junior Olympics is a wonderful, spirited tradition in the Los Altos School District with almost 1500 participants, hundreds of cheering fans, and tremendous community support. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders from all Los Altos schools gather for a day of fun, food and good spirited competition. The day starts with an opening ceremony and Olympic procession. Student athletes proudly parade around the track carrying their school banner and wearing their school t-shirts. Students compete in track and field events throughout the day. We encourage everyone to strive for their personal best and to cheer on their classmates as they compete!
Junior Olympics is the culmination of the P.E. program and features 9 track and field events: 1320 yard distance run, 75 yard dash, 60 yard hurdles, 400 meter relays, basketball free throw, chin ups, long jump, softball throw, and 30 second jump rope. The events are organized by grade and gender. Students choose their own events and may participate in three events plus one relay. Relay teams are selected according to time trials taken during P.E. classes.
Training takes place for six weeks during P.E. classes starting in March. Parent volunteers assist the P.E. Specialists with student training. Relay training takes place outside of school hours. Parent volunteers and coaches will receive training.
Junior Olympics is run solely by parent volunteers with help and support from the district P.E. Specialists who work hard to train our athletes and prepare them for the events. This district-wide event is chaired by a committee of representatives from all seven elementary schools. Responsibilities for various aspects of this event such as security, first aid, food, computers, and event management rotate among the schools. It requires hundreds of volunteers to support our student athletes. Everyone is encouraged to be a part of this exciting community event!

Walden West Science Camp
Each year all the 6th grade students attend Walden West Science Camp, located on 32 acres in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains near Saratoga, California. During the one week long program, students and teachers live and learn outdoors with guidance from experienced field instructors. Walden West promotes hands-on science learning that emphasizes life sciences and sustainable living practices. Lessons in the natural sciences come to life, helping students better understand and appreciate their world.
During their stay, students will have full access to the wooded trails in Sanborn County Park, which provides an additional 6,000 acres of study area. They will enjoy learning about the forest, meadow, and stream communities through the use of games and other activities. Qualified naturalists will use their expertise to help children see the interrelationships between plants and animals as well as the effect we have on the environment.
The Walden West site provides everything needed to assure your child's comfort. The facility includes a dining hall, shower room, infirmary, as well as cabins that are carpeted, heated, and furnished with wooden bunks and mattresses. The students will be eating nutritional and tasty food. Students serve themselves during family style meals and are encouraged to eat as much as they would like. The cooks are experienced in preparing and serving balanced meals and help make sure your child's needs are met.
This experience is social as well as academic. Students also develop their social and leadership skills at Walden West living 24 hours a day with other students requires your child to cooperate and work together with others toward common goals. Friendships that are made during this week will last a lifetime.
