Welcome Back from Spring Break!

Are you looking for different ways to engage your child with literacy? Sitting and reading a book is great but with the weather getting sunny and the endless amounts of energy that seems to come stock with all children (mine included), sometimes you need to think outside of the cover. Below are some suggestions that get students reading and writing while being active and having fun with you!

-Cooking/baking: Reading recipes or even writing some of their own is a great way to get students seeing literacy in a really functional and fun light.

-Monterey Bay Aquarium, Museum of Sciences, Tech Museum…ect: Museums provide a fun and purposeful way for students to engage with text. Have a post-it writing contest when you get home to see who can remember the most interesting facts!

-Explore a new library: One thing is for sure, students love to explore new libraries. Drive a little out of your neighborhood and explore a new collection of books…maybe bring a picnic of those baked goods all of you cooked and enjoy a book and a picnic. Might I recommend the Cupertino library with its huge fish tank (my personal favorite).

-Scavenger hunt: Create a scavenger hunt for your child. No matter how old they are, all children can get into  reading and solving riddles…especially if there is a a prize at the end (a new book perhaps ☺) Do you have multiple children? Have the older siblings write these fun riddles for the littles. Activities such as this have them both reading and thinking analytically.

-Coding: I will write more about how coding can promote literacy in another blurb (stay tuned) but try out Scratch with your child or code.org and have fun reading and programming!

As we inch closer to summer, these are fun ways to keep the literacy momentum up at home while having fun as a family. I know my daughter and I will be having fun in the weeks to come with all these fun activities! So join me on this fantastic journey of energetic and engaging life-long learning!
