If you enjoy working with young learners, exploring nature, and making important academic topics literally “come alive” to students…..please consider becoming a volunteer docent in LASD’s Living Classroom Program.  The Living Classroom offers hands-on, garden-based lessons in grades K-7 in science, math, and social studies, all aligned with existing curriculum and State standards.

Time Commitment:   After attending training sessions or observing lessons, we ask for a minimum of three lessons per month which equates to about 4 hours.   The Program.is very flexible in accommodating lesson, grade level, or school preferences.

Training:  Eight training sessions are offered in the fall and two in the spring, but docents are not required to attend all training sessions and may alternatively learn about the lessons through “apprenticeship” style training by observing and assisting with lessons.

Qualifications:  No specific education background or experience  needed—the lessons are all well written and organized and provide background information to familiarize docents to the topic. The main qualification is enthusiasm for helping school children learn through exploring the natural world.
