MVLA PARENT EDUCATION SPEAKER SERIES William Deresiewicz will give his perspective on how college should be a time for self-discovery, when young people can establish their own values and measures of success in order to forge their own path. Based on his experiences teaching at Yale and Columbia, Bill believes that as colleges shift focus from the liberal arts to narrowly “practical” subjects such as economics and computer science, students are losing the ability to think critically and creatively. Bill is an award-winning essayist and critic, and the best-selling author of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. He taught English at Yale for ten years and at Columbia for five.
