BookQuest

Welcome back to BookQuest - the program that gives every Grizzly Student a chance to become a published writer! And a chance to give back to the community.

Go online to www.gardnerbullis.org and click on BookQuest under the "GB Events" tab. Purchase a publishing kit for $25 by Nov. 2, 2018. For every kit purchased, $5 will go towards a cause to be determined by our Student Council.

Last year we raised $570 and the money was given to the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health. See Stanford's blog where they recognize Gardner Bullis for this donation: http://supportlpch.org/blog/inspiration-kick-your-school-year. The kits will be delivered to classrooms by Nov. 16, 2018. This is a take home project! Submit completed kits to the classroom by Jan. 25, 2019 and the books will get published in time to be displayed at the BookQuest Celebration, which will be on April 2, 2019 - International Children's Book Day. All are invited to the celebration. We will have a special guest author, prizes, and of course, our student authors will get to take their published books home!

LAHS Eagle Theatre

201 Almond Avenue, Los Altos, CA

Why is sleep so essential to good health? What are signs of poor sleep and how can you address them?  Join us as Dr. Rafael Pelayo explores the crucial role sleep plays in healthy child and adolescent development and shares the latest research in sleep science at Stanford—where sleep medicine began.

Topics discussed will include:

·        Sleep, the brain, and the mental health connection

·        The underappreciated importance of sleep for children and teens

·        Impacts of prolonged sleep deficits on learning, behavior, and health

·        Signs of poor sleep and pediatric sleep disorders

·        The impact of technology use on sleep

·        Lack of sleep and driving safety

·        Sleep and school start time

·        Recommended sleep for elementary, middle and high school students

·        What you can do if you are concerned about your child’s or teen’s sleep habits

Dr. Rafael Pelayo is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine.  His clinical focus has been the treatment of sleep disorders in patients of all ages and he has served as chair of the Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board of the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the National Heart Lung Blood Institute at the National Institute of Health.  Dr. Pelayo has also chaired the pediatric special interest section of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.  Currently, he teaches the Stanford University Sleep and Dreams undergraduate course alongside Dr. William Dement.  Together, they co-authored the course textbook, Dement’s Sleep and Dreams, 2nd Edition.

This month’s ABC book: “Simon’s Hook” by Karen Burnett is a colorful story that compares teases to fishing hooks and tells the tale of how the fish learned not to bite.

Goals of lesson:
- Help students feel empowered and in control of their responses to hurtful teases and put-downs.
- Have students learn and practice specific language and techniques to allow them to swim free.

Please ask your child about the 5 strategies that Simon’s neighbor, Grandma Rose, offers to help Simon avoid taking the bait:
1. Do little or nothing—don’t react!
2. Pretend to agree with the hook.
3. Change the subject to distract the bully.
4. Laugh at the hook and make a joke of it.
5. Stay away from the hooks and swim in another part of the sea.

As caring adults in the lives of youth, we can help develop and nurture skills to navigate the rough patches in life. Our ultimate goal is for youth to be able to handle these bumps and ruts on their own!

Cornerstone Corner

September’s ABC book: “Have You Filled a Bucket Today” by Carol McCloud is about expressing daily kindness and appreciation to others.

Goals of the lesson:
-Teach students the 3 laws of bucket filling: Be a bucket filler. Don’t dip. Use your lid.
-Empower students to intentionally fill their own buckets and the buckets of others with good feelings (warm fuzzies).

After your child has had the lesson in class, ask your child to tell you more about:
Warm fuzzies: What are they?
Bucket fillers: How can you fill your own bucket and the buckets of others?
Bucket dippers: How can you keep a lid on your bucket and how can you help bucket dippers fill their bucket?

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...Notice, Name it, and Celebrate it!
