Junior High STEM Career Day Makes the News LAEF would like to congratulate the LASD STEM Team on its first-ever STEM Career Day at Blach and Egan. Our 7th & 8th graders had the opportunity to learn about the different professions within the field from NASA scientists, architects, software engineers, physicians, chemists, tech entrepreneurs, neuropsychologists and many others. An Egan student shared, “I had no idea that so many different STEM fields were required to build surgical robots”.

Science Olympiad This year we are trying something new and having our very own Science Olympiad here at Gardner! Students in grades 3-6 will be participating in a variety of STEM related competitions. It will be a half-day event (8:00am – 12:00pm) on May 25th. In order to make this happen, I am in need of 14 volunteers for this event! I will hold a meeting for those interested in volunteering on Thursday, April 6th from 8:00 – 8:30am. If you are unable to make this meeting, but would still like to volunteer, please let me know! Please feel free to email me with additional questions – vlombardi@lasdschools.org. 9th Annual Talent Show Here’s your chance to show off your amazing talent! The Gardner Bullis Talent Show is one of the favorite activities of the year and it’s YOUR chance to shine! Registration is open online NOW! Every kind of talent is welcome! Date: Thursday, May 11th at 5:30pm Registration Deadline: April 28th For more information, mandatory rehearsal schedule, and to register go to the Talent Show webpage. Questions? Please provide a copy of your child’s immunization record to your school office as soon as possible! MVLA PARENT EDUCATION SPEAKER SERIES William Deresiewicz will give his perspective on how college should be a time for self-discovery, when young people can establish their own values and measures of success in order to forge their own path. Based on his experiences teaching at Yale and Columbia, Bill believes that as colleges shift focus from the liberal arts to narrowly “practical” subjects such as economics and computer science, students are losing the ability to think critically and creatively. Bill is an award-winning essayist and critic, and the best-selling author of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life. He taught English at Yale for ten years and at Columbia for five.

Health Services Staff When to Keep Your Child Home From School Sometimes it is difficult, especially early in the morning, to know whether or not to send your child to school. The following guidelines are indications that you should keep him/her home. In this way, you are helping to control the spread of colds, flu, and other contagious illnesses. Keep your child at home when he/she has any of the following symptoms: • Fever of 99.6 or higher • Vomiting or Diarrhea • Sore throat or trouble swallowing • Rash or unusual sores or spots • Generalized muscle aches and pains • Unusually red, crusted or burning eyes • Chills • Nausea • Coughing, sneezing, and/or runny nose • Headache • Wheezing or trouble breathing • Head Lice
You need to keep your child home until he/she has been symptom free without medication for 24 hours. Also, NOTIFY THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY if your child is exposed to or contracts chicken pox, mumps or measles or whooping cough (pertussis).
