Why Parents Matter More Than Peers: Restoring A Healthy Balance in Adult-Child Relationships

Dr. Gabor Maté

Thursday, October 12, 2017 @ 7:00pm at Mountain View High School Spartan Theatre

More than ever before, children and teens today turn to peers rather than parents and other caring adults for emotional support, values, role models, codes of conduct, and defining their own identity. This overly skewed “peer orientation” disrupts healthy development, undermines family cohesion, and fosters an aggressive and prematurely sexualized youth culture.

Hello Gardner Families,

It is with great Joy that I introduce to you the latest TWO additions to the Grizzly family.  Vicki Lombardi recently had her twins-Lucas and Tyler-and the “Lombardi Clan” is doing very well and resting at home.  The staff is so happy for them and looks forward to meeting these two little guys.

Student Council Update

This week we went through Rounds 1 and 2 of our Student Council elections and had 26 students participate in the application and interview process.  We are very proud of ALL 26 students. Round 3 begins on Monday, October 2nd and will consist of a week of campaigning for the 19 students who have advanced.  At the end of the week, all students will vote for their Student Council President, Vice, President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Assistants.

Caring for Hurricane and Earthquake Victims

Thank you to all of the families who have donated to one of the multiple fundraisers to help the natural disaster victims.  The teachers and I (and in particular Mrs. Leinenbach and Mrs. Chambers) especially thank you for helping us to adopt the 7 classrooms in Houston.  It is not too late to donate and here is an updated link to their school supplies needed.

Our Mexico City fundraiser lead by parent Magali C. begins Friday, October 6th during pick up time.  Starting at 2:00 pm, please look for the table of baked goods, flavored gelatins, tamales, and shaved ice.  All donations will support the victims of the devastating earthquake in Mexico City.

October's Character Trait of the Month

Confidence:  A feeling or belief that someone or something is good or has the ability to succeed at something.

ATTENDANCE #: 650-559-3232

PLEASE CALL ATTENDANCE LINE 24/7 for student’s missing school due to illness, appointment, and trips.

Regular school attendance is one of the most critical factors in a child’s success in school and is one of the hallmarks of an effective school. Please support the efforts of Gardner Bullis staff to provide your child with the best possible education by having your child at school and on time daily. Excused absences are granted for medical or dental appointments, illness, and religious holidays only. PLEASE bring a note from the medical provider upon your child’s arrival back at school, that your student was seen in their office.

Excused Absences for Religious Holidays

Just an annual reminder that observed religious holidays are considered excused absences as long as the absence has been requested in advance in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or designee (E.C. 48205, B.P. 5113).

SELFY – Social Emotional Learning at Lunch

We have created this lunch program to take Project Cornerstone, Second Step, and the new LCAP goals to a new implementation level outside the structured classroom. Currently students are learning social and emotional competencies and skills in the classroom. This program is designed to facilitate their reinforcement and generalization during the unstructured times of day when children often interact.

If you'd like to help out and donate games to this cause you can either make check out to Gardner Bullis PTA, bring to the office and put in the Field Day box. Or you can purchase a game yourself - just ask kids what they like (assuming it's appropriate) and bring it to Gardner. Please give to office and label as SELFY lunch program.

We will have a training for SELFY if you are volunteering. It is Sept 27th from 3:15-4:15 at Gardner.

If you'd like to volunteer please sign up here. It will run Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays 12-12:45pm beginning Oct 2nd.

We’ve raised $1 Million!

Thanks to the 555 amazing and generous LASD families who have contributed to LAEF this school year and helped us reach this important milestone. We’re off to a great start!

Our goal is to raise $3.7 Million to support STEM, arts, literacy, wellness and personalized learning now through June 2018.

Every TK-8th grade student in LASD is benefitting from LAEF-funded programs, and that’s why we strive for 100% parent participation. The suggested donation per student is $1,200 (or $120 per month for 10 months). Every gift in any amount is appreciated. Learn more & make your tax-deductible donation today at www.laefonline.org.
